“But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”
Wow I read this as one of my readings today and it was like the first time of reading it again. How can we expect people to hear unless someone tells them?
I wonder if the church in the UK is sleepwalking when it comes to evangelism. I don’t mean it in a harsh and shouty way but in a “not really aware of the consequences way?” Speaking as someone who wasn’t told for a long time - I didn’t know! I didn’t know the good news because no-one shared it with me! Think about it where would I have heard it? The media isn’t going to tell me (look at Franklin Graham’s bus ads about hope being banned!!!). School won’t tell me. My workplace won’t tell me. The nightclub or pub won’t tell me. Our society are trying to eradicate Christian faith from our consciousness in case it offends someone.
Well you know what? That deeply offends me to the core of who I am.
So who does that leave to tell the good news? And it is good news. We are not bring asked to share bad news it’s GOOD news. News that people are loved. News that there is more to life than just this! News that Jesus died for them and would even if they were the only person on the planet. News that there is a family waiting for the lost, the Widdows, the orphans. GOOD news.
Who does that leave? Well it’s US! His hands and feet on earth. So why don’t we share it? Fear of being laughed at? Fear of getting it wrong? Fear of losing our job? Fear, fear, fear and more fear. Fear is the work of the enemy to keep us trapped and prevent us speaking - but Gods love is bigger. Every time I have shared the good news with someone (which isn’t often enough) I have received a beautiful response. Don’t get me wrong People don’t always agree but everyone has appreciated the love behind the message. Weird isn’t it that when you tell people they experience the love in the message even if they don’t accept it. We are not responsible for the outcome of telling someone - that is Gods job. He is the one who stirs someone’s heart to receive. We are just called to share our reason for the hope that we have.
So today who can you tell? So that like Ron and I they don’t spend time wandering the earth not knowing they are loved. “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news”.
